Module 7: Google Earth
Screenshot of my Google Map:
For this week's module, we were tasked with creating an interactive map on Google Earth along with a tour of some of the hotspots in South Florida. We only used ArcGIS Pro to convert data about the water surfaces in South Florida into a KML file so that it can be uploaded onto Google Earth. I had done this type of conversion before in a previous course so it was pretty easy for me to do but I did run into some problems with my laptop not working correctly and not allowing for everything to download so I had to do some tinkering but was able to fix it! I knew how to add files onto Google Earth by just double-clicking the KML file but I decided to do some research and found two other ways to upload KML files onto Google Earth in case I had any problems in the future. I played around more in Google Earth and learned a lot about utilizing the properties button for each layer and being able to edit them to my liking. Adding the placemarks was my favorite because I learned how to change the symbol and color as well as the label which allowed me to make the map more like my style but obviously still legible for the audience. The tricky part was creating the tour of all the hotspots in southern Florida. I struggled with moving around the different placemarks and showing the area, it took me a few tries before I got a video to my liking within a suitable amount of time. I think it is awesome that we have technology like this that allows us to visit anywhere in the world and we can see a 3D version of it in most areas. It allows anyone to travel at a click of a button or to check out where they are traveling in advance.
