Module 2: Land Use/Land Cover

Another fun week in Aerial Photography and Remote Sensing! This week we were tasked with labeling and identifying the Land uses/land covers (LULC) of Pascagoula, MS. Since we could not go out into the field to document and verify what exactly is there, we were given an aerial photo of Pascagoula and using what we learned about visual interpretation from last week; began identifying each LULC. I first outlined each area with is respected code in a single polygon to be labeled later on. This was the easy part but definitely the most tedious. Once, I had everything outlined and labeled, I randomly placed 30 points on land to check if I correctly labeled majority of the LULCs. I used google maps and referenced the aerial photo landmarks and was able to find every point. Seven out of the thirty points were "false" or otherwise wrong from the original LULC I had chosen. Most of these were building that are or were homes in the past and converted into a business or churches. My overall accuracy was 77%. Not perfect but not too bad for not being able to go out into the field!
