Final Project: Sarasota-Manatee Transmission Line
For this final project, we were tasked with analyzing data from an FLP Transmission Line running through the Sarasota-Manatee Boundary. This project was definitely the longest but it was still fun! I was tasked with finding what environmentally sensitive lands will be affected by this transmission line as well as homes, parcels, schools, and lastly finding what the length of the transmission line will be. Using what I learned from previous labs, I was able to successfully intersect, buffer, geocode, georeference and calculate the geometry of this project. There were some setbacks with data not loading properly or with the wrong input being entered but since I have been learning and using these tools a little more and more, I was able to get through them quicker than usual.
Some background to this project, the FLP has gone through over 1,000 different routes to find the best one. This is pretty wild considering how long it took me to complete this project (newbie of course) but even with that, it still is a lot of time commitment and a lot of analyzing date. This project also depicts how much work companies go through and need to go through in order to find the best route for the project and keeping the community happy. Of course, there is no perfect world but at least with GIS, we can create and analyze data from pretty much anywhere.
The storymap was fascinating to me because it is such a likable way to share information with the public and it does tell a story. I messed around with the different templates and would like to use it more and create a new template somehow.
This course has been incredibly useful and full of new information for me to learn. I definitely will keep referencing these Labs and this project.
